In conversation with… Cantabs Rugby Club

We recently caught up with the head coach at Cantabrigian RUFC – affectionately known as Cantabs. The home of amateur rugby in Cambridge, the club is located just a short walk from Aura, our latest development at Great Kneighton.

With three adult teams playing in the London and Eastern Counties leagues, the team has been an integral part of the city’s rugby scene since 1946. With its friendly atmosphere, the club has attracted new players and supporters throughout its years to create a vibrant, family club.

Playing a key role in the Cambridge community, Countryside is proud to be a main sponsor for the club, enabling them to make improvements to their training facilities and branding.

Read on to find out more about Cantabs and some of the things the team love most about the local area.

What is your favourite thing about being part of the rugby club?

“Cantabs feels like my extended family - the people involved - both on and off the field - make the club the fantastic place it is. Players are involved in the actual running of the club as well as playing which creates a lovely dynamic, as players are working to make the club better for all. Past players are still actively involved in the club, the brilliant supporters and the fantastic people in the kitchen and behind the bar all help create the friendly family-like environment.”

How do you describe the area to your friends/family?

“Having lived in Cambridge for around 15 years, the area is very green and surrounded by stunning countryside. Even when in the heart of the city, you’re surrounded by beautiful buildings and open spaces to explore – which is rare for cities!”

What are your favourite things about coaching rugby?

“Watching the players work hard and perfecting their skills. I also love seeing the commitment expressed on the field, especially seeing players laying their bodies on the line for their teammates. All of the players and coaches at Cantabs share a collective goal.”

What is your favourite local secret / hidden gem in the area?

“There are a lot of amazing cycling and walking routes, I particularly love exploring Gog Magog and Wandlebury!”

For someone new to the area, how would you suggest they get involved in the community? “Cambridge is full of sports clubs and other interesting clubs and groups including volunteering or walking groups – I’d definitely suggest joining a club, not only is it a great way to meet new friends but they will all have a similar interest to you.”
