In Conversation With: Forty Hall Vineyard

Countryside catches up with Emma Lundie, Head of Operations at Forty Hall Vineyard. Located on Forty Hall Farm in Enfield, the vineyard is nearby our Elements development, meaning the new residents can be out exploring the vineyard with family and friends.

How long have you been working at Forty Hall Vineyard for?

Three brilliant years.

What is your favourite thing about working there?

Forty Hall is an escape to the North London countryside! The farm is a hub of activity, with a market garden and a veggie bag scheme, rare breed animals, a community orchard and our own vineyard. It's great to spend a lot of time working outdoors in such a unique place and to be a part of a hub of local food production that really benefits the community.

How do you describe the Enfield area to your friends/family?

Given Enfield is such a hugely diverse London borough, the area of Forty Hall is an unexpectedly rural pocket. There are lots of interesting historical properties, which allows you to get a sense of the Enfield of old. Our vineyard is situated on Forty Hall Farm which is on the Forty Hall Estate. Many people comment how peaceful the vineyard is and the pathways and woodlands around the Estate are also gorgeous for walking and cycling.

What is your favourite local secret / hidden gem in the area?

The woodland area in Forty Hall Farm. It really is tucked away and feels quite magical when you're there. They have a weekly forest school (in normal times) and there's a music stage in there for the annual Livestock Music Festival, held at the farm. The monthly farmers' market on the farm will be opening again soon on the second Sunday of the month and that's a good opportunity to pick up some local produce, explore the farm and maybe find the hidden woodland!

In your own house, what is your favourite room and why?

The dining room. It's where the family gathers to eat, work, do homework, chat and argue! It also looks out onto the garden so when I'm working in there (which was a lot more often during lockdown) I have a nice green view of the trees.

What does the word community mean to you?

Community is about people sharing an experience or place. For me a community works best when it encompasses people from all walks of life and generations. Forty Hall Vineyard is tended by a community of volunteers who all benefit from being a part of our project.

For someone new to the area, how would you suggest they get involved in the community?

Volunteering is an excellent way of meeting local people and there are lots of opportunities in Enfield. If you like the outdoors, Forty Hall Vineyard offers weekly volunteering sessions, tending the vines. Our project aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the community through gentle outdoor exercise and making connections with people.
