Micheal & Nejla
Michael Katasi and his partner Nejla Kayserili, both 28, had been saving for a deposit for some time when they found their first-ever home at New Avenue in Oakwood, north London. Soaring house prices and rising rent in the capital meant the couple thought they’d have to compromise on the location and the size of their property to be able to afford their first home.
Research recently carried out by UK Finance shows first-time buyer mortgage completions across the country have risen by 1.2 percent. While this is fantastic news, London properties are still out of reach for many young buyers with the highest average age of a first-time buyer at 33.
Michael and Nejla, who started seeing each other two years ago, were keen to move in together and were living with family in north London before buying a property at New Avenue. Michael said: “We’re both family-orientated so we were keen to live close by. At New Avenue, we’re about 15 minutes from both families so we can easily visit - it’s the perfect spot for us.
“I grew up in Enfield and I know the area well. Nejla works in the City, so she can travel to work on the Piccadilly line, and I work in Hertfordshire, with the M25 being so close I can be there quickly – really ideal for us.”
The couple looked at several developments in the Oakwood and Southgate areas, but New Avenue really impressed them. They opted to purchase a spacious three-bedroom apartment, with an open-plan living and kitchen area with a balcony. Michael said: “I thought we’d struggle to afford a two-bedroom home so I couldn’t believe we managed to buy a three-bedroom apartment. We’re so happy with the design, there is plenty of light and we’re really proud to show our friends around when they visit.”
The couple used the Government’s Help to Buy initiative to help fund the deposit for their property.
Michael commented: “I’d really recommend using Help to Buy, we wouldn’t have been able to afford this apartment without it. I was quite anxious about purchasing a property – it’s a big deal! Countryside was so helpful and the team there took away a lot of the usual stress. We were actually on holiday in Thailand while the purchase was going through, but the sales team were fantastic, they kept us updated every step of the way and ensured everything was running smoothly for us. We’re really thankful.”
New Avenue is a regeneration scheme in the suburb of Oakwood, in the London Borough of Enfield. When complete, it will offer 268 private new homes, along with a community centre for residents. Comprising a mix of mews houses and apartments, the homes benefit from the development’s outdoor space, which includes a central sunken garden, play area and orchard – ideal for families who are seeking the best of both worlds – lots of green space on the doorstep with all of the perks of living in the capital. New Avenue is conveniently located near a range of schools for children of all ages, including Southgate School, rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
Residents at New Avenue can also benefit from excellent local amenities. The centres of Southgate, Cockfosters and Barnet, all close by, not only provide ample shopping with major high-street brands and independent shops, but also excellent entertainment venues.
New Avenue is located between Southgate and Oakwood stations on the Piccadilly line with Southgate a 20-minute walk away providing services to King’s Cross in 24 minutes and London Liverpool Street in 38 minutes.
