Countryside’s winning development duo bring prestigious Brick Awards’ Best Large Housebuilder award
The event ceremony, held last Thursday night at The Hilton on Park Lane, was created by the Brick Development Association. The Brick Awards are designed to celebrate the best in design and architecture of brick-built developments.
Horsted Park, located close to Chatham and Rochester in Kent, is a new community of two bedroom contemporary apartments and four bedroom houses, while Foundry Gardens is a new development of three, four and five bedroom contemporary and traditional houses in Haywards Heath, Sussex. Both schemes are set in carefully landscaped parkland and appeal to a wide range of people from first-time-buyers to large families.
Tom Sherriff, Managing Director of Countryside South: “We are very proud to win this award, based on our work alongside Clague Architecture and brick supplier, Forterra, in creating the fantastic new community at Horsted Park. A core principle at Countryside is building homes and communities that complement their surroundings, including the existing built environment. And the choice of bricks and the way they have been used to beautiful affect do just that at the developments.”
Christopher Sherlock-Scougall, Associate Architect at Clague Architecture, who worked on Countryside Properties’ Horsted Park Phase II development, said: “Horsted Park has been a fantastic scheme, and we’re thrilled that Countryside Properties has been awarded Best Large Housebuilder after putting the development forward to the BDA’s Brick Awards.
“The brick selection and detailing takes its cue from the architecture of Rochester but has been reinterpreted to create a contemporary looking scheme that sits comfortably with its surrounding as well as creating a unique sense of place. As part of this, we developed a diaper brick pattern for the frontage of the homes, based on the Victorian idea of cross patterns to break up the frontage of buildings. Forterra’s Ecostock Chelsea Smoked Red bricks were ideal for this, and complement the local vernacular very well.”
Stephen Harrison, Chief Executive of Forterra said: “We are delighted that our clients Countryside Properties have been named best Large Housebuilder at the 2018 BDA Awards. Their Haywards Heath and Horsted Park developments used Forterra bricks to create exemplary new homes which deserved the judges’ recognition.
“Projects such as these reinforce why bricks continue to be the nation’s favourite building product, thanks to their versatility, durability and the vast range of standard and bespoke brick types available from manufacturers such as ourselves.”
